Smoky Bar
I left home this morning just before the dawn
I had to get an early start. I had a big load on
I reached for the lunchbox my wife fills for me
And pulled my rig out onto Interstate 63
I drove all day and as the sun went down
I pulled into a smoky bar just outside some town
I plugged some quarters in the jukebox, ordered up a round
Opened up my lunchbox, read the letter that I found
(ch)
Smoky bar, can you hear me? You are my only friend.
Smoky bar, she is leaving. My world is at an end.
Smoky bar, can you keep the music playing all night through?
Smoky bar where would I be without you?
She says she’s getting weary of being home alone
Waiting up all night for me to call her on the phone
So she’s been dressing up and going out somewhere downtown
Now she says she wants to keep the freedom that she’s found
But what am I to do? It’s plain to see
That rolling down the highway is the only life for me.
Now I’m thinking that old road is not the friend it seems
‘Cause that old road has made me lose the girl of my dreams.
(ch)
Smoky bar, can you hear me? You are my only friend.
Smoky bar, she is leaving. My world is at an end.
Smoky bar, can you keep the music playing all night through?
Smoky bar where would I be without you?
(break)
